About Shady Sands Academy
Building Better Drivers for a Better Republic
Founded in 2172 by Elias Mercer, a former Republic ranger and transportation officer, Shady Sands Academy began with a simple idea:
A growing Republic needs drivers who know what they're doing.
In the years following the establishment of the New California Republic, settlements began reconnecting, trade routes reopened, and roads that had been abandoned for generations once again became essential to everyday life. With more citizens traveling between communities, the Republic faced a new problem-there were plenty of vehicles, but very few people who knew how to operate them safely.
Mercer believed that needed to change.
After years spent escorting caravans and maintaining Republic transportation routes, he established the Shady Sands Academy with a handful of refurbished vehicles, a borrowed classroom, and a conviction that safe driving was essential to the future of civilization.
The Academy has grown considerably since those early days.
Today, Shady Sands Academy provides comprehensive driver education to students throughout the Republic, combining classroom instruction with practical behind-the-wheel training. Our instructors teach students not only how to operate a vehicle, but how to recognize hazards, make sound decisions, and remain calm when conditions aren't exactly ideal.
And in the wasteland, they rarely are.
Our History
2172 - The Academy Is Founded
Elias Mercer establishes the Shady Sands Academy in response to the Republic's growing need for trained civilian motorists.
2181 - The First Republic Training Standards
The Academy works alongside local Republic officials to establish a standardized curriculum covering traffic laws, vehicle operation, road signs, and defensive driving.
2194 - Expanding Beyond Shady Sands
As the Republic grows, so does the Academy. Training begins serving students from communities throughout Southern California and along major Republic trade routes.
2241 - A New Generation of Drivers
By the time of the Second Battle of Hoover Dam, Shady Sands Academy has trained thousands of Republic motorists. Its distinctive curriculum has become familiar to families throughout NCR territory.
Today
From the streets of Shady Sands to the highways stretching toward the Mojave, our mission remains the same:
Prepare the next generation to travel safely, responsibly, and confidently throughout the Republic.
More Than Just a License
Learning to drive has always been about more than passing a test.
It's about knowing when to slow down.
Knowing when the road isn't safe.
Knowing how to respond when something goes wrong.
And, most importantly, knowing that every other vehicle on the road has a person behind the wheel.
Our instructors bring practical experience and patience to every lesson, helping new drivers develop the skills and judgment they'll need long after they've earned their Republic driver's license.
Whether you're driving to work in Shady Sands, delivering supplies to a neighboring settlement, heading east toward the Mojave, or simply trying to get home before sundown, we want you to be ready for the road ahead.
Our Mission
To help build a safer, stronger Republic-one driver at a time.
The world may have changed.
The roads may be rougher.
And there may be considerably more things trying to kill you along the way.
But good driving still matters.
Learn the Road. Know the Rules. Serve the Republic.
